Kent lies between the Thames estuary and the Strait of Dover. Its geography and positioning mean that it is fertile both naturally and historically. Its position between London and the continent meant that it saw a lot of action in World War II. Indeed, much of the Battle of Britain was fought in the skies over the county. It is also home to the white cliffs of Dover.
Its rich history spawned several castles and cathedrals, the most famous being Canterbury Cathedral and Dover Castle. However any visitor to the area should not limit themselves to visiting these two landmarks as there is much more of interest throughout many areas of Kent. For those who like their history a bit more ancient, there are many ancient monuments including the Medway megaliths which are scattered across the Medway Valley.
A long coastline provides the opportunity for a large variety of activities, coastal and sea bound. Opportunities for diving and fishing are many, with PADI dive training available from several operators. Many fishing operators have fish-finding equipment on board, so you're likely to come home with something for the pot. Of course, you don't have to hire a boat, bait shops are strung along the coast, so you don't have to dig too deeply in your pockets for a hand-line and a bag of squid to reel in a few mackerel.
Because of its abundance of orchards and hop gardens, Kent is widely known as "The Garden of England". Kent's low lying topography means that the visitor is never far away from greenage or verdance. One area of particular note is Ashford Green Corridor, a green space that runs through the town of Ashford in Kent, England. The Green Corridor is made up of parks, recreation grounds and other green spaces alongside the rivers that flow through Ashford. A great day out!
A series of galleries and museums also dot the region, so if its raining, there is always something to do visitors. In Kent you are never far away from art and culture. (more, Inland?)
