Essex History And Background

Due to the location and the close proximity to the North Sea, Essex has been subject to many invasions over the years, subsequently the invading armies including Romans, Normans, Saxons and Vikings have at one time or another left their own mark on Essex. The results are a County that is rich in historic towns, buildings and even industry, there are many fine examples of castles and churches in Essex making it an ideal location for those that love visiting places of historic interest.

In particular Colchester Castle provides an excellent example of a Norman Castle, built on Roman ruins that date back to AD44,the castle was completed circa 1100.The castle which is now a museum is an excellent starting point for any visitor to Colchester and provides useful information on the 2,000 year history of the area, including excellent displays and tours. If you take part in a tour you will be able to see remains of a Roman Circus and Roman Theatres.

Another region of particular interest is bound to be Epping Forest, this area has been designated as a landscape of both National and International conservation importance, which luckily saves it from any further encroachment from the direction of London. The ancient forest gave its name to the area and part of the district is now a park, the Lee Valley Regional Park. If visiting this region then it worth calling in to the Lee Valley Park Farms, the farm is 17 acres and is open to the public to visit the rare breed animals, Pet Centre, small mammals and reptiles.

For those with an interest in maritime adventures then a visit to Essex will provide the opportunity to travel along an exceptionally long stretch of coastline, some 350 miles in fact, with the opportunity to experience a variety of boating and sailing trips including the interestingly named ‘ Viking Saga Boat Trips’. For fun packed family fun then a trip to Adventure Island which has over 60 rides to thrill and excite as well as rides aimed at smaller children. If the weather is not so good but you still want to enjoy all the marine magic then a trip to Sea-Life Adventure is an absolute must. Open 350 days a year and stocked full of aquatic marine life you will be able to give the children an entertaining but educational day out whilst keeping everyone happy no matter what the unpredictable British weather has to offer.

There are so many activities for visitors to enjoy when vacationing in the Essex, including cycling, horseriding, walking, twitching, golf, tennis as well as sailing and kitesurfing. Of course not to be forgotten are the beautiful seaside areas and what visit to Essex wouldn’t be complete without visiting Clacton Pier or a trip to the largest town in Essex, the delightful Southend-On-Sea. Certainly a visit to Southend-On-Sea should be on your list of trips if shopping or amusement arcades are prominent in your mind – but if you want the shopping experience of a lifetime then Lakeside shopping mall at Thurrock is an absolute must.
