Dorset has recently achieved the recognition that it so rightly deserves when it was awarded World Heritage Status, this is in addition to parts of the county already being designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The whole of the County is full of historical places to visit, from natural creations such as Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove, to man-made ones such as the ancient ruins of Corfe Castle which is a stunning example. There is the old Roman town of Dorchester where the remainder of a Roman wall can still be seen today, and also with its beautiful Georgian buildings and links to historical events such as the Tolpuddle Martyrs, is well worth an excursion to.
For those interested in outdoor pursuits then there can’t be many places that can better Dorset, there are so many activities to consider and of course there is the countryside and seaside walks and hikes but there are so many other things to do besides; fishing, cycling, golf, horseriding, canoeing, diving, Paragliding, quad biking, sailing, dry ski slopes, water rides, water skiing, surfing, extreme water sports to name just some. Clearly because of Dorset’s reputation for stunning coastal areas and beaches water sports of one form or another are most certainly a lure, however the whole county offers much in the way of outdoor leisure pursuits as well as plenty of indoor ones too.
When travelling through Dorset you will encounter many interesting sounding place names and it is always worth a detour to see what you might be missing. Certainly the coastal areas have many tourists flocking to them but there are so many other delightful places inland that might be overlooked. Once such place that is certainly worth a visit is Sherborne Castle, this impressive castle is set in 40 acres of exquisite grounds that were landscaped in 1753 by the legendary Capability Brown and offer the visitor an opportunity to step back in time and indulge in a historical excursion of days gone by.
If you are looking for somewhere for the family to let off steam then a visit to Adventure Wonderland Family Fun Park in Hurn (not far from Bournemouth Airport) should be on the agenda. Certainly if the weather is bad and you are looking for something to do then this is a superb choice as it has so many indoor and outdoor activities for the whole family to enjoy, this wonderful attraction is open pretty much all year round and only shuts for three days over the Christmas holiday. Whilst so close to Bournemouth it makes sense to take a trip to Bournemouth itself where you will be able to enjoy the glorious 6 miles of sandy beach and maybe even a stroll along the Pier.
Without doubt when you visit Dorset once you will want to visit again as a return trip will be essential to tour all the many places that you didn’t get to see the first time. Dorset is addictive as once visited it will remain with you and will be a constant source of wonderful memories, but also a small sense of regret that you haven’t yet seen it all!
