Devon famous for its Jurassic Coastline, maritime City of Plymouth and cathedral City of Exeter, has a wealth of attractions to suit all types of visitors. Once invaded and held under the Roman military might, Devon has evolved into a complete tourist hub, brimming with all kinds of activities, days out and exciting experiences, find below just a very small selection of the many wonderful things to see and do.
For those that are concerned about the environment where better to visit than the ‘ahead of its time’ Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway, completely environmentally friendly this Victorian cliff railway uses only the weight of water to power it. It is possible to board the lift in the pretty village of Lynmouth and to travel up the steep cliff face to visit the quaint village of Lynton 500 feet above.
If that is not to your fancy then travel further along the coast to the Regency town of Sidmouth and home of the famous International Folk Festival. Sidmouth has a history of smugglers and reputedly the Old Ship Inn which dates back to 1350, was once a favourite rendezvous for the criminal fraternity. Modern Sidmouth provides the perfect location for relaxing and enjoying gentle walks, whether along the beautiful beach or the Esplanade but now days there is no brandy or tobacco smuggling going on – or so we are told! For the more energetic there is Pony Treking, fishing, rock climbing, swimming, tennis and golf and so much more besides.
A trip along the cost to The English Riviera provides access to the picturesque towns of Paignton, Torquay and Brixham. Torquay is a virtual hub of activity day and night with a pretty harbour, marina and seafront promenade. Paignton Zoo should also be on the agenda when visiting the area as the zoo is one of the most well maintained and cared for in the country, special attention has been given to provide the animals with as close to a natural habitat as possible, and provides a fun packed day for all the many visitors.
Dawlish is the perfect place to stop to enjoy a break with a traditional cream tea whilst enjoying the pleasant Regency and Victorian architecture and not forgetting the delightful spectacle of the famous black swans that inhabit the area.
Further inland one of Devon’s most interesting and also unusual tourist attractions is Buckfast Abbey, home to the Roman Catholic Benedictine monks, it is possible to tour the abbey enjoying the architecture, whilst experiencing the quiet calm that the monks still enjoy today. A visit to the award winning shop is also a must, there you will find a full range of products created by the monks and nuns such as beer, wine, silk, and liquers.
For those looking for adventurous outdoor activities then Devon provides a vast array from surfing, canoeing and extreme sports both on land and at sea (or even in the air), as well as the quieter less daring pursuits to follow such as horse riding, golf and fishing. Walkers or those cycling, have seemingly unending countryside, beaches and pathways to explore. Make sure that Devon is on your list of places to visit and you will not be let down.
